The iconic style of Vespa in its most innovative version receives honourable mention at the 26th edition of the world’s most authoritative design award

Milan, 9 September 2020 - With the implementation of electric technology, Vespa confirms its status as a timeless icon, a symbol of modernity and the years to come. The International Panel of the 26th ADI Compasso d’Oro awards rewarded Vespa Elettrica with an Honourable Mention, a prestigious recognition that distinguishes excellence in global design.

The motivations included the following: “Vespa Elettrica confirms the pioneering and innovative spirit of a brand, Vespa, unique and unmistakable in the global mobility market.

Vespa Elettrica is the most modern icon of Italian style and technology. It is synonymous with advanced connectivity and quiet operation, customisation and accessibility, environmental friendliness and unique design. Vespa has always had these values, now fully expressed in the Vespa Elettrica, confirming its status as a brand that has always been modern, youthful and a step ahead of its time.

Established in 1954, the ADI Compasso d'Oro Award is the oldest and most authoritative global award in design, resulting from an idea of Gio Ponti to highlight the value and quality of Italian design. Since 1964, the ADI (Association for Industrial Design) has organised the Award, monitoring its impartiality and integrity. The close to three hundred projects to receive an award in more than fifty years since it was established, along with almost two thousand selected for Honourable Mention, have been collected and are kept in the Historic Collection of the ADI Compasso d'Oro Award, which is managed by the ADI Foundation.

The reipient of the Compasso d'Oro award is chosen based on a pre-selection made by the ADI Permanent Design Observatory, which consists of a committee of experts, designers, critics, historians, specialised journalists, members of the ADI or external to it, all continuously committed to gathering information year after year, evaluating and selecting the best products, which are then published in the annual ADI Design Index.

The Piaggio Group had already been honoured with the Compasso d’Oro award in the ’90s and with an Honourable Mention, with the Vespa 946, in 2016.

The awards ceremony was held in the display area of the new ADI Design Museum in Milan, where Vespa Elettrica will be on display from today until 16 September along with all the other products which were competing in the 26th edition of the Compasso d’Oro.
